A New Virus

Our cruise ended today and we are so happy to see our babies and puppies and kitties. There's no place like home! Having that break really gave me an appreciation of all that is my life.

There is more news about the new virus in China. It has apparently come from a "wet market" in Wuhan. I had never heard of a wet market before. Apparently this is where they sell and kill animals for customers to take home to eat. I can't fathom this - we are very spoiled in the US with our pre-butchered, packaged, ultra clean meat. We just need to take it home and cook it well. Imagine selecting your live chicken and watching the butcher wring it's neck and dunk it in boiling water to loosen it's feathers, then cutting off it's head to drain the blood. (I see where the "wet" comes in! Yuck) I don't know if they gut the chicken there. I wish I knew the full process, but they don't allow much information to get out of China. It's a Communist nation, after all.

So this wasn't just a "wet market" but one that specializes in wild animals. Wild Animals! From what I am seeing in the news, they have snakes, wolf puppies and bats. I am attaching a photo of a "menu" from such a market  They say these are "delicacies" to the Chinese people. I personally can't imagine that an overpopulated country like that has room for such luxuries - I would think this is food to survive. But I do not know much about the people there. Again, it's not like we get a lot of information from there.

It's a Novel Coronavirus. A coronavirus is a bug that is transmitted from animals to humans. We have strains of coronavirus already, it's usually the cause of the common cold. You can see on the side of a Lysol can that it's a known virus. However, this is a whole new strain, it's "novel." Speculation is that it's from eating bat soup. That makes no sense, as viruses can't live in that kind of heat. Word is that it could be from snakes. Either way, if it's from a bite or from bat poop, we don't know.. And that's a little unnerving.
